Can't backup before upgrade

I'm trying to get a backup of my database done before I go ahead and upgrade. I tried doing it through the admin to the server. I created a file called backup and gave it 777 permissions. Help! Upgrade from 3.0.17 to 3.5.0 Fails

I've done this process twice now.
